College Promo Video

Interview

I chose to research and interview for the role as the director because I haven't had many opportunities to direct and I want to have the creative freedom to lead a team but I also want to share my visual ideas and use them in a video.

Codes and Conventions

I researched a promo video and I wrote a list of the codes and conventions from the video, diving them into pros and cons.

Promo video research

My chosen promo video which I selected; I believe wasn’t successful as there wasn’t a lot of product placement included as they mainly showcased and focused on the artist, rather than his work. I also believe the camera shot sizes, angles and movements didn’t engage me as the framing was off and various shots were longer than they needed to be.  Despite all of this, I do believe that the video’s use of colour grading, text and logos were effective for this promo video. I also think that their narration and voiceover fit well too. What I think didn’t do well was their visuals. As I said previously, their pace and camera work weren’t really effective but also in a few of their shots, you could see the crew and light equipment which shouldn’t have been in frame.

To make sure my promo video is a success, I will ensure that I show off the product/brand that I am promoting, and I will keep it short and snappy as I don’t want to use unnecessary long shots like they used in the video I researched.

Here are some screenshots from the promo video I looked at including a few of the code and conventions.

Pre-production

Me and my team created a shooting schedule so that we knew when to get certain things done.

Me and my team messaged the art department do that we could gain permission to shoot during the art lessons.

Final college promo video

Me and my group had to do a promo video for the art department at college for the arts festival in June. I was on sound and editing and I believe myself and my group created a successful promo video. We interviewed two art students and one of the teachers and added B-Roll on top. We came across some issues along the pre-production and production stages of this assignment. In pre-production, none of the art staff were answering our emails to gain permission for shooting so instead of filming art students working, we had to shoot art displays and previous work. During production, our H4N Zoom Recorder decided not to work, we tried reapplying batteries multiple times but it still didn't seem to work so instead we had to use the voice memos app on our phones to record audio, luckily the audio seemed to still sound clear which worked out well. In post-production I wanted to use bright colour grading as that suited the college's colour scheme and I wanted to showcase the colourful artwork.

Editing stages

1 - I added my clips onto the timeline and colour graded my clips with a yellow/orange tone. I also synced the audio to the clips to match them to the interviewee.

2 - I included text to my interview clips as it's important for the viewer to know what questions they are answering. For the text font and colour, I used the college colour scheme to select my colour choice as it goes with the chosen brand and I wanted a creative stylish font to go with art theme.

3 - For music, I chose an upbeat tone as it makes the audience cheerful. I added my chosen song to the timeline and turned down the audio gain so that you could the people talking.

4/5 - I added the Gloucestershire College logo in the corner of the clips and at the end as it is important to showcase the brand you are promoting.
